1,000 volunteers set to drive citywide anti-litter campaign

A TEAM of 1,000 volunteers will next week embark on a citywide anti-littering campaign by driving around Shanghai on the lookout for offenders, officials said yesterday.
People who want to join the campaign are expected to fit their vehicles — at their own expense — with a video camera, and then submit “evidence” of littering by other road users to a designated authority.
The footage will be uploaded to the Internet to shame the offenders, the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said in a press release yesterday.
Every day, more than 40 tons of litter are cleared from 1,000 kilometers of roads across Shanghai, the bureau said.
It did not provide details of how the team will work on a day-to-day basis, but said it will mostly comprise bus and taxi drivers.
The team will be supported by a network of 16 static anti-littering cameras, it said.
Officials said they will also put more garbage bins near to the entrances to toll roads and in service areas in an effort to encourage people to dispose of litter responsibly. Under Chinese law, anyone found guilty of throwing litter from a vehicle can be fined between 20 (US$3.25) and 200 yuan.
