2 firms fined for discharging pollutants in Minhang District

TWO companies in Minhang District have each been fined 50,000 yuan (US$8,067) for discharging noxious pollutants into the air, a local environment official told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

Shanghai Yiding Electronic Co, which produces coated laptop casings, and Huanyi Technology Co, a tablet screen producer, were found to have serious problems with their pollution control equipment, said Zhou Hao, head of the monitoring team at the Minhang Environmental Protection Bureau.

During a spot check at Yiding, officials found a leak in the extraction system, while at Huanyi, they discovered that the plant’s entire waste gas filtration equipment had broken down, he said.

The two companies, which are based at the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone in Zhuanqiao Town, were both running at full capacity when the bureau made its unannounced visits.

As well as the fines — which were the largest the bureau could impose for the offenses — the two companies were ordered to rectify the problems with their pollution control systems within two weeks, Zhou said.

Residents of Zhuanqiao have been complaining to the bureau for two years about a foul smell in the air near their homes. Following exhaustive air quality tests, officials determined that Yiding and Huanyi were to blame, and the spot checks were arranged to confirm the findings, Zhou said.

The bureau will continue to conduct air quality tests in the area and maintain a close watch on all companies operating there to ensure the noxious odor does not return, he said.
