5 air-quality testing firms get warnings

FIVE local indoor air-quality inspection companies were told by local government watchdogs to stop performing unqualified tests that give false readings.
The companies given warnings were the Shanghai Huxing Professional Inspection and Management Co, the Shanghai Jienuo Quality Inspection Co, the Shanghai Disease Control Biological Engineering Inspection Co, the Shanghai Ousa Environmental Management and Consulting Co and the Shanghai Pudong House Quality Test Co, officials said.
The warnings were issued by the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.
Officials from an industry group, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association, said some air quality testing companies cheat customers by producing fake reports and asking customers to pay a lot to hire them to remove the pollutants.
The non-profit industry alliance was established in the city yesterday to help regulate the industry and offer customers proper information on purifiers.
"Though the public has gained awareness on the harm from indoor pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene, there are few people paying indoor air quality inspecting companies to do the test," said Li Wei, general secretary of the association. "Such companies just exaggerate test results and lure customers to pay them to clear up the pollutants."
Li said there were companies charging customers 500 yuan (US$79) for a test but 5,000 yuan to remove the pollutants.
The air purifier industry alliance will offer free indoor air testing to some families between now and October 30.
A total of 500 local families will be able to get free testing by registering at www.apiac.org.
