A perfect day but brace for chill

The city enjoyed its first day of perfect air condition, clear skies and brilliant sunshine yesterday after some consecutive hazy and polluted days.

The density of PM2.5 particles stayed below 40 micrograms per cubic meter for  most of the day when AQI dropped below 50 at 4pm — making it a perfect day.

Local environmental authorities have said the air quality will remain excellent today morning with the AQI ranging between 30 to 50, but may exceed 50 in the afternoon with PM2.5 the main pollutant.

The warm climate in the city is likely to make way for a cold front tomorrow with high winds pushing temperatures down to single digits on Thursday.

High pressure will bring back sunny skies on Thursday.

Light to moderate rain, triggered by a southwesterly warm and moist air, will humidify the city today.

Some districts may experience misty condition with low visibility lasting for short periods.

Temperatures will hover between 8 and 14 degrees Celsius today. Tomorrow the high will be 10 degrees and 5 degrees on Thursday.

A low of minus 1 degree is tipped for Friday with heavy cloud cover.

Saturday will be slightly warmer again with the mercury ranging between 2 to 8 degrees with some slight drizzle.

Snowfall unlikely

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said it was unlikely the city would experience  snowfall during the cold front this week.

“Although Shanghai often has its first snowfall in early January, there have been some years when the first snow fell in February or March,” said Zhang Ruiyi, a chief service officer of the bureau.

“Various conditions are necessary for snowfall, not just moisture, an upward movement of air and the formation of ice particles, but there should also be an appropriate temperature and thickness for the cloud layer to ensure the particles don’t melt before they fall,” Zhang said.
