Air and water quality getting better

THE discharge of major water and air pollutants in the first half of this year was 1.05 percent and 2.79 percent lower than the same period of last year, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said yesterday.

There were 233 days with excellent and good air quality from January to August, including 96 excellent days, 20 more days than the same period of last year, the bureau said.

Officials said the city government's Environmental Protection Action Plan (2012-2014) would focus on pollution prevention and environment renovation instead of treatment after enterprises polluted the environment.

"Shanghai will kick off a special campaign in the Nanda area in Nanhui District to deal with industrial pollution there before the end of this year and finish the renovation by 2015," said Mayor Han Zheng.
