Air quality to improve on weekend

AN improvement in air quality is expected during the weekend thanks to breezy conditions, and it should be pleasantly warm and dry, forecasters said.

The city had three consecutive days of light pollution starting Tuesday, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center. The chief pollutant of tiny PM2.5 particles remained over 100 micrograms per cubic meter for most of the day, which contributed to hazy conditions. The nation's limit is 75 micrograms per cubic meter in the latest 24 hours.

The density of PM2.5 - particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter - started to rise quickly from 80 micrograms per cubic meter at 7am to a peak of some 180 at 10am. Forecasters said the high PM2.5 density was caused by a combination of pollutants from other regions and local pollutants, which accumulated given light winds.

The density started to drop, falling to 110.4 micrograms per cubic meter at 4pm.

The environmental center said children, the elderly and people with heart or respiratory illnesses should avoid lengthy outdoor exercise during lightly polluted days.

The weekend's weather should be nice, with the high temperature remaining above 25 degrees Celsius and cool evenings, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Today is forecast to be partly cloudy with the mercury ranging from a low of 12 degrees to a high of 25. Tomorrow also should be partly cloudy and slightly warmer, with a low of 15 degrees and a high of 27.

"The weather is getting warm and should feel comfortable," said Kong Chunyan, a chief service officer of the bureau. "The high in the day could reach 26 to 27 degrees but the temperature difference between day and night should be large."

It might rain on Monday. It's likely to be cooler on Tuesday, with a high below 20 degrees.
