鈥楤utterfly bridge鈥 nearly ready at Dianshan Lake

A bridge spanning the city’s largest lake is near completion in the western Qingpu District suburb, the district’s water authority said yesterday.
The 1.47-kilometer-long bridge over Dianshan Lake in Zhujiajiao Town connects the lake’s Shanghai aquatic sports center and the border of Jiangsu Province.
The bridge is longer than the popular Bai Causeway at the West Lake in Hangzhou.
The neoclassic bridge is supported by a number of arches and its main part resembles the popular Fangsheng Bridge in the town.
The bridge also imitates the butterfly shape of the district’s boundary with the coast of the lake, an official with the authority said.
The 8-meter-wide bridge will be accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and small sightseeing vehicles, the district government said. It will be completed in September.
The bridge is part of a project to improve the ecological environment and the flood prevention ability of the lake.
The water authority has reinforced flood walls and created ecologic wetlands on the lake. Some 4-kilometer-long flood prevention dams have been reinforced along with newly built and renovated floodgates.
Construction on the bridge started in May 2015 in a bid to improve the environment and to attract residents as well as tourists to the area.
