City chokes on poor quality air

THE city's air quality was poor yesterday with PM2.5 readings peaking at more than 160 micrograms per cubic meter in the morning, environment monitors said.

The gauge of airborne pollutants smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter was more than double the national standard of 75 micrograms, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.

The average PM2.5 reading in downtown areas dropped below 50 micrograms by 3pm yesterday and the air quality is expected to improve today, according to the center's forecast.

The temperature dipped to a low of 11.6 degrees Celsius yesterday and it will remain cool today, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Drizzle is forecast for tomorrow with a high of 20 degrees.

Another cold front from the north is expected to reach the city tomorrow evening.
