City to curb those ads on the move
SHANGHAI will restrict advertising on ships, cars, and aircraft to help improve safety and reduce visual pollution.
"We have drawn up a series of regulations to restrict outdoor advertising on moving platforms and they are likely to be approved by the local government before February," said an anonymous official with the local environment watchdog.
After the regulations take effect, it will be illegal for private cars to carry advertising. Some private car owners have been signing deals to get paid for advertising carried on their vehicles.
As well the billboard boats, those carrying advertising along the Huangpu River, will be put on restricted routes.
The billboard boats will not be allowed to operate between the Yangpu and Lupu bridges.
"These boats will be banned from the downtown stretch of river for safety reasons - brightly lit billboards could affect cargo and passenger ships from clearly seeing navigation lights on the river," the official said.
Aircraft carrying advertising will also not be allowed to enter some downtown districts, according to the new regulations.
Taxis and buses will also be regulated for the content and positioning of the advertising they carry.
"Buses, for example, will only be allowed to carry advertising on a reduced space on their exteriors,'' said the official. Products deemed inappropriate for advertising will also be banned.
