Cleaner tap water for the suburbs
CITY suburbs are set to get cleaner tap water as the authorities replace polluted sources linked to disease with more pure supplies.
Zhang Jiayi, director of the Shanghai Water Authority, said yesterday that the water supply system will be integrated in the near future to improve water quality, especially in suburban areas.
By July next year, 51 small water plants, many of which take water from deep wells or polluted creeks, will be closed.
The renovated network will see all 17 districts of Shanghai supplied with water from the four major reservoirs - the upper Huangpu River and Chenhang, Qingcaosha and Dongfengxisha, all from the Yangtze River.
By 2015, the water supply of Chongming County will also be integrated into the network, the authority said yesterday, World Water Day.
"The water source for small plants in the suburbs is low quality, which threatens the health of local residents," Zhang said yesterday.
"The facilities in these plants are also aged and not able to meet national requirements."
In recent years, problems in plants in Songjiang, Qingpu and Jiading districts and Chongming County have led to the supply being cut off.
On January 14, 2009, a pump failure in a major water plant in Songjiang left 300,000 people without tap water for 17 hours.
At present, there are at least 74 small water plants in the city's suburban areas.
"The project is urgent," said Shen Jun, deputy mayor of Shanghai. "Some diseases in Chongming County have been linked to the tap water, so we must sort that."
Nine new water plants including two on Chongming Island -- are to be built, and six other renovated.
Meanwhile, 114 kilometers of water pipelines will connect the four major reservoirs with water plants.
