Developer sought for first ecological community
THE first stage of a low carbon community is to be built in Chongming's Chenjia Town before 2012, making it the first ecological community in Shanghai.
Chenjia Town is in the east of Chongming Island and the landing point of the Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge expressway.
Construction of the low carbon community is one of the most important projects being undertaken in Chenjia Town.
The low carbon community, also called the Experiment Ecological Community, lies in downtown Chongming and will occupy an area of just over 4 square kilometers.
The community will be a modern ecological community that will utilize all types of technologies, including solar and wind power.
"With all these ecological technologies, the carbon footprint of our community will reduce by 30-50 percent and the utilization rate of regenerated energy will account for 20 percent of the whole," Liang Jun, deputy general manager of Chenjia Town Construction Development Co Ltd, said.
Land has been prepared for the construction of the community and Liang is now looking for a reliable developer. "Developers are demanded to adhere to the low carbon standard which will be applied in all respects such as traffic planning, energy use and building construction," Liang added.
The island plans to complete five low-carbon projects by 2015 in its bid to create sustainable development, Zhao Qi, director of the island, said previously.
The projects include a rural community, agricultural land, an industrial park, an eco-tourism zone, and a platform for scientific research, Zhao told the 2010 Shanghai Chongming Eco-island International Forum earlier this month.
"Chongming has adhered to a low-carbon development path that has brought great achievements in environmental protection, agriculture, green buildings and renewable energy," Zhao said.
