Enthusiastic tree trimmers rile residents
MASSIVE tree trimming was halted yesterday in an old residential community in the Pudong New Area after people complained that some of the trees had been cut too much.
City greenery officials said it was an indication that people's awareness of protecting the environment has increased as in the past people would just demand that all the trees shading their windows be cut.
"It will be a great help when residents really care about the environment," said Ma Yun'an, director of the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Administrative Bureau.
The trees, some of which are rare redwoods, have been growing in the Shangnan No. 6 residential community for 25 years, locals said.
"We will discuss the issue with residents," said a property management official surnamed Shi.
Shi said the trimming work had won the approval of two-thirds of the residents in the community, which is a must before any cutting can begin.
However, residents said they were shocked when they found some of the tall trees had been cut down to only 2 meters.
Li Li, an official with the city's greenery commission office, said the workers who cut the trees may be poorly skilled.
Li said the office has received dozens of complaints about poor trimmings this year.
In the past, people were more likely to complain about trees blocking the sun from their windows.
"But now some trimmings are overdone," Li said.
Officials would further guide procedures as they found some property management companies hire poorly skilled workers to do the cutting in order to save money, Li added.
According to Shi, the trimming work would not be possible if there was no subsidy from the district government.
"We did not expect such kind of embarrassment," Shi said.
