Fairy-tale park for kids

YANGPU District intends to build a Hans Christian Anderson-themed park for children, officials said yesterday.

The Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Administrative Bureau's Yangpu branch said the park will occupy more than 81,400 square meters in the new Jiangwan area.

Children will find there the little mermaid, the ugly duckling and other characters created by the Danish writer of fairy tales.

Officials did not announce an expected opening date for the park.

One of the city's political advisers said earlier that local parks and museums were a good way to educate and entertain children and suggested the city build more of the type of parks that were popular in Shanghai 20 years ago.

"Children should have some place to play," said Dao Shuming, a member of the Shanghai Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the director of the Shanghai Tourism Administration.

Local greenery authorities said kids' facilities will be opened in other old parks, such as Tianshan Park and Zhabei Park. The Chenshan National Botanical Park, which is under construction in Songjiang District, will also set aside areas for children.
