Fog grounds, delays 74 flights in Shanghai

DENSE fog grounded 45 flights and delayed 29 flights at the city's two airports this morning, airport authorities said.

Thirty one flights were cancelled and 20 were delayed at the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport by 9:30am while 14 were cancelled and nine were delayed at the Pudong International Airport.

Visibility was just 1,800 meters at the Hongqiao airport and 1,200 meters at the Pudong airport. The city issued a yellow fog alert, the third highest level following red and orange, www.xinmin.cn, reported.

The fog also delayed four bullet trains headed for Beijing as of 8:20am.

The weather bureau later lifted the yellow alert because the haze was expected to disperse before noon.

The city's PM2.5 index rose to 184 micrograms per cubic meter at 8am but the air pollution will be driven away by an approaching cold front, the city's environmental protection department said.
