Garfish a threat to local ecosystem

A ferocious fish with sharp teeth was caught in a river near a residential community in Minhang District. It struggled to get free, bit through a plastic bag and hurt the hand of the angler, today's Shanghai Evening Post reported.

Experts said it is a kind of garfish originally from South America. Garfish has a long slender body and a beak-like jaw containing pointed teeth. It has exited on earth for more than 100 million years and is dubbed a living fossil.

This alien predator poses big threat to China's ecosystem. They were initially imported as aquarium fish but some people recklessly set them free. The first garfish in a Shanghai river was caught in 2007.

Experts said garfish meat is edible after cooking in high temperatures, but its spawn is poisonous and may kill people.
