Gas leak company did not cooperate
MANAGEMENT at a petro-chemical plant responsible for a gas leak on Sunday initially refused to cooperate with safety officials, it was revealed yesterday.
Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical Corp staff went so far as to prevent inspectors entering a building, said the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.
Residents across the city reported the pungent "rotten eggs" odor about 2pm. Yet it was not until midnight that Gaoqiao Petrochemical was confirmed as the source of the hydrogen sulfide leak.
"The company refused to cooperate with the authorities," said Chen Wei of Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau. "Staff even refused to open the door."
This was the fourth accident involving Gaoqiao Petrochemical in the past 15 months. It faces a fine of up to 200,000 yuan (US$30,000).
