Green growth despite scarcity of space

TOTAL greenland coverage in the city increased by 400 times in the past 60 years and public greenland shared per person rose 100 times.

As an analogy, "personal coverage" had grown from a pair of shoes to a small room, Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau officials said at a forum yesterday discussing greenery development in the past 60 years.

However, officials said city greenland coverage was still at a medium level when national figures were taken into account due to Shanghai's huge population and limited land resources.

The same reasons have restricted further greenery development.

Shanghai had 34,256 hectares of greenland park by last year covering 38 percent of the city, much more than the mere 86 hectares in 1949, when the People's Republic of China was established.

Shanghai planned to build 1,190 hectares of greenland and renovate 54 old parks this year.

"We are looking for some new measures to promote green coverage through vertical greening like roof gardening, balcony greening and bridge greening under limited city space," Liu Weiguang, a bureau official, said yesterday.

Roof gardening increases green coverage, purifies the air, saves energy and stores rain water.
