Heavy pollution to linger till tomorrow

THE smoggy weather will continue for another day with tiny PM2.5 particles the main pollutant, the city's environmental authorities forecasted this afternoon.

The air quality index should range between 245 and 265 tonight, and 260 and 280 tomorrow morning, indicating “heavily polluted”, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

The AQI is expected to fall slightly between 190 and 210 from 12pm to 8pm tomorrow, the center said.The stable weather conditions poses poor dispersing conditions, piling up pollutant density, according to the center.Smoggy weather blanketed the city today with a level of PM2.5 particles about seven times higher than the World Health Organization’s safe standard, posing a risk to those with heart and respiratory conditions.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a haze yellow alert, the lowest of three levels, at 2:43pm, warning that the visibility fell to less than 5000 meters because of a moderate haze, and the haze is expected to linger till tomorrow morning.The air quality index started rising from a “slightly polluted” level at 7am to 228 or “heavily polluted” at 1pm, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.The density of PM2.5 particles reached 178.3 micrograms per cubic meter at 1pm, higher than the safety guideline of 25 micrograms set by the WHO.
