Island to get green bus fleet

The suburban Chongming County will be turned into a low-emission island and develop a new renewable-energy public transit system in the next five years.

All of the 400 to 500 buses running inside the island county will be domestically made green vehicles, said officials from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission yesterday.

The plan was released after yesterday's meeting, when the Ministry of Science and Technology signed a five-year partnership agreement with the city government to support Shanghai's scientific development and projects, including the implementation of eco-friendly technologies showcased at the Shanghai World Expo and other major innovations like new-generation information technology.

"The renewable-energy vehicles used at the World Expo are a very good demonstration of the technology," said Vice Mayor Shen Xiaoming.

"The green vehicles traveled a total of 7 million kilometers and made 125 million trips for Expo visitors, but resulted in zero emissions inside the Expo zone and low emissions around the zone," Shen said.

Other low-carbon projects Chongming will set up by 2015 include a rural community, agricultural land, an industrial park, an eco-tourism zone and a platform for scientific research.
