May start for island wind power station

CONSTRUCTION of one of city's major wind power plants in Changxing Island will begin in May.

The project investor, Shanghai Shenneng New Energy Investment Co Ltd, said the first phase of the project, which includes 24 wind turbines, is expected to be completed within six months.

The windmills, next to the Qingcaosha Reservoir, can generate 100 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year, enough for over 65,000 households.

The generating capacity will reach 250 million kilowatt hours annually by 2015 with 60 wind turbines in service, said a manager, surnamed Jin.

Shanghai will also see the completion of Asia's first sea-wind power plant in the East China Sea off the city coast by the end of this month.

The 2.3-billion-yuan plant, including 34 wind turbines, will generate 260 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
