Minhang firm facing fine for fouling the air
AN electronics company in the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone in Minhang District will be fined for discharging noxious pollutants, an environment official told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
Zhou Hao, head of the environmental monitoring team at the Minhang Environment Protection Bureau, said while the content of the waste gas produced by the Shanghai Yiding Electronic Co was within permitted limits, its stench was beyond tolerance.
People living in Zhuanqiao Town have been complaining about the smell for two years.
“We have received many complaints about air quality in this area,” said an official surnamed Wan from the agency’s petition office.
“Sometimes, a single person might contact us three times a day.”
Following exhaustive air quality tests, the administration found that the smell was coming from the coatings the company sprays on the laptop casings it produces, Zhou said.
The details of the punishment are still under discussion, but the company will certainly face a fine, he said.
