New fireworks to cut down on sulphur emission

With the Chinese Lunar New Year closing in, a local company is promoting environmentally friendly fireworks that has low emission in an effort to cut down on pollution.
Fireworks is a big feature of Chinese festivals and the concentration of air pollutants are generally higher because of sulfur dioxide and other particles emitted by crackers.
Jinqiling, a local fireworks company and responsible for purchasing and supplying fireworks to the city’s retailers, said it will introduce a new type of “green” fireworks this year instead of the regular ones. It said the new fireworks will take up half the wholesale market. The fireworks were first tested during the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
They are made of materials with less or no sulphur, cutting down the emission of sulfur dioxide and other particles.
A worker at the company said the visual effect and price of the fireworks are similar to the general ones. But despite claims that these fireworks were less polluting, some of the residents are not convinced that they serve the ultimate purpose at all.
“We can celebrate this festival in other ways, for example, having hotpot together,” a man surnamed Tang said yesterday.
