Petrochemical plant on environmental blacklist
COMPANIES responsible for everything from toxic gas leaks to excessive noise have found themselves on Shanghai's first environmental protection blacklist of the year.
A total of 338 businesses feature on the list, which covers the period from last October to February, published by the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.
Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical Corp is named and shamed for a leak last November in which gas containing toxic ethanethiol spread across several districts.
The Gaoqiao plant was later fined 200,000 yuan (US$30,828) by the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.
During cleaning on November 23 last year, ethanethiol - which should have been removed beforehand - was exposed to the air.
Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao seems certain to also feature in the year's second blacklist, as it was fined 200,000 yuan in April following a hydrogen sulfide leak on March 20.
Poor cooperation from the company delayed the authorities' efforts to locate the leak.
Also included in the bureau list is the Shanghai Shangshi Meat Co for excessive air or water pollutant discharge and Bananaleaf Curry house's branch on Nanjing Road E. for construction violating the environment.
UK supermarket chain Tesco does not escape censure either, with its Qibao store listed for excessive noise.
The 338 companies were punished by city or district-level environmental protection bureaus for 342 offences.
More than 57 percent of punishments were for construction impacting on the environment; 25 percent for air or water pollutant discharge; 6.4 percent for improperly using pollutant processing facilities; 3.8 percent for violating solid waste, medical waste and dangerous chemicals management; and 0.3 percent for excessive noise.
The bureau began publishing the blacklist in 2003.
