Pilot project cleaning up
A PILOT project which can upgrade badly polluted water into drinking water in just one day is to be extended to the upper Huangpu River, the water source for Shanghai residents.
The Dalian Lake project downstream of Dianshan Lake will be promoted from the current 10 hectares to the entire 100 hectare lake area and connect all its neighboring 28-kilometer riverway network by 2012, officials from Qingpu District said yesterday.
Jointly launched by the Qingpu District and World Wide Fund for Nature, a complete and healthy ecosystem had been established within the past two years with the building of two islands and the use of 17 world leading wetland repair technologies including the introduction of water purifying plants and aquatic animals.
"Huangpu River lacks natural barriers against pollutants," said Wan Jiayu, a WWF Shanghai official. "The wetland repairing project can create a barrier to ban pollutants and purify water to the river, the source of local people's drinking water."
Officials said the project will eventually cover the entire Dianshan Lake and water conservation areas in Songjiang and Minhang districts.
