Powerful start for Shanghai wind farm

CHINA'S biggest offshore wind farm officially started transmitting power to the national grid this morning, authorities said.

Donghai Bridge Wind Farm off Shanghai's coast is expected to generate 267 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year with 34 wind-driven generators, which could meet the demand of more than 200,000 households in the city.

Although the total capacity of the wind farm was only 102 megawatts, less than one percent of the city's current 18,200-megawatt capacity, it was a good start for the application of clean energy in China, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

The commission said with the operation of the Donghai wind farm, the city could save about 100,000 tons of coal and reduce about 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year.

The construction of the wind farm, located at east side of the Donghai Bridge, was started in September 2008 and before the official operation, the wind farm had been on a trial run for more than a month, the commission said.

The first batch of the power generated by the wind farm would be transmitted to the World Expo Site.
