Pudong designates 68 sites for street traders

PUDONG New Area government has designated 68 outdoor market sites for street traders to legally carry out their business without causing problems, officials said yesterday.

For years, road-side stalls have been illegal and there was concern about criminal activities and the nuisance caused by street traders. Authorities have tried many times to crack down on fly-by-night traders but in vain.

The Pudong New Area Environmental Protection and Sanitation Bureau has now offered street traders a legal business system rather than closing them down.

The designated areas for road-side trading are mainly dead-end roads, unused roads and open spaces where traffic can't be disrupted.

Street traders are encouraged to sell breakfast, vegetables, fruit and newspapers and provide mending services as well as other services to nearby residents in the designated areas.
