Recycling scheme for electronic waste
ELECTRONIC waste such as broken computers or flash drives now have a better place to go instead of in the bin.
They can now win you credits for your "green gift cards," which can be used at thousands of local stores, restaurants and gas stations.
After calling or registering online, professional waste collectors will come to your communities or offices to collect the e-waste for disposal.
The service, put forward by the government-supported Jinqiao Renewable Resources Market Management early this month, aims to put illegal trash collectors out of business by offering residents more convenient recycling services, government officials said yesterday.
"Illegal trash collectors receive old items, but reject damaged goods which can't be resold," said Feng Liping, deputy manager of the firm.
"In comparison, we receive all kinds of e-waste, which is a way of protecting the environment," she added.
The firm has put collection bins in 387 communities or office towers and the service will cover more than 1,000 communities by next June.
For small items, locals can stick a bar code to the object then put it into the collection bin in their community.
The bar code proves your identity as each card owner has a specific code. Workers will know who disposed of the item and charge credits into the owners' card account.
