Red tide alerts
A MONITORING and alarm system is being built to warn residents when seafood is contaminated by a toxic "red tide" algae bloom. Work began on the alert mechanism on Saturday and it should be in place within two years, local authorities said over the weekend.
It will include a quick testing method which can tell in just two or three hours whether seafood has been poisoned by red tide. Currently, test results take two to three days.
