Roof gardens sprouting
MORE roof gardens will spring up on buildings in the next five years, as the city has few ground-level spaces for residents to plant trees, the Shanghai Afforestation and City Appearance Administration said.
The "multiple layers of greenery project" will also see plants on buildings' walls. A total of 1.5 million square meters of such greenery - the equivalent of 21 Xujiahui parks - will be created by 2015, said officials.
More than 80 percent of new buildings at the Hongqiao Hub and Lingang New City will include roof gardens.
