Scheme set to cut waste

THE residents of the Yanji community in Yangpu District yesterday became the first in the country to use a machine that turns “wet” household waste into animal feed and fertilizer.
The machine was installed on a trial basis and others might be set up if the scheme runs well, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.
Kitchen waste accounts for 80 percent of all household garbage, so it is important that it is properly sorted and processed, officials said.
“To help make the scheme work, people should first separate their garbage into wet and dry items,” said Li Wei, secretary-general of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association, which is involved in the waste processing scheme.
The Shanghai government said earlier that based on 2011 levels it plans to reduce the per-capita amount of rubbish that needs to be processed by 50 percent by 2020.
The city has more than 30,000 garbage dumps, which handle about 2 tons of waste per day. About 50 to 60 percent of the total is kitchen waste.
According to official figures, 7.36 million tons of domestic waste were produced in the city last year, up from 7.32 million tons in 2010.
