Sewage plant set to be largest in world
SHANGHAI'S Bailonggang sewage treatment plant in the Pudong New Area is set to become the world's largest by 2020, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said yesterday.
Since opening in late 2009, the plant has had a treatment capacity of 2 million cubic meters a day - meeting one third of the city's needs.
But once upgrading work is complete, the daily processing capacity will rise to 3.5 million cubic meters.
The plant has greatly improved the city's drainage treatment ability, reducing the discharge of chemical oxygen demand (COD) - organic compounds in water, protecting the Yangtze River and improving the environment.
It reduced COD discharge by 70,000 tons between 2006 and 2010, half the city's COD reduction over that period.
