City suffers moderate pollution first workday

SHANGHAI’S air was moderately polluted today, a smoggy start for the first workday of 2014.

The city’s AQI reached 175 at 1pm, triggering a recommendation for a reduction in prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion for groups such as the elderly, children and people suffering from heart or lung disease.

Tiny PM2.5 particles were the main pollutant with the PM2.5 density peaking at 90.3 micrograms per cubic meter at 1pm.

Pollution is expected to ease late this afternoon, with the AQI between 95 to 115.

Today's high of 16 degrees Celsius represented a return of some warmth.

Tomorrow's low is forecast to be 7 degrees Celsius, with the high of 15 degrees. The mercury will fall on the weekend as a cold front arrives.
