Shanghai warned of moderate air pollution

Shanghai's air quality dropped to the level of moderate pollution this morning and the vulnerable groups are advised to stay indoors.

The real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 172 at 8am, indicating a moderate level of air pollution, the fourth on a six-level rating system with level six indicating the heaviest, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Such air pollution could affect people's cardiovascular and respiratory systems and is especially harmful to those who are physically weak, medical experts said.

Children, seniors and people with heart and respiratory diseases should reduce their outdoor activities, they said.

The city's air quality began to deteriorate last night, driving up the pollution index, according to the pollution monitoring center. Real-time data can be found at http://www.semc.gov.cn/aqi/home/Index.aspx.
