Stink traced to waste firm trucks
ENVIRONMENTAL watchdogs are investigating whether a household waste processing company violated regulations, after confirming it was the source of a bad smell in downtown areas on Saturday.
The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said the smell - that was worst in part of the Pudong New Area and Huangpu District - came from garbage trucks that were traveling to and from the waste company's premises.
The stench was made worse by the wind direction and low air pressure.
The bureau is checking the working procedures of Pudong Meishang Biological Hi-tech Environmental Protection Co and will impose punishment if any violation is detected, officials said yesterday.
Bureau officials said they couldn't confirm whether or not the emissions were harmful to people's health, but said the density was not high.
Residents living in Yushan Road in Pudong started to complain about a "rotten egg" smell at 10am on Saturday. Visitors at Pudong's Century Park also called the authorities about a smell like "rotten watermelon."
The smell spread to Huangpu District at 11am and lessened at 5pm.
Environmental protection officials said they located the source at 7pm.
Officials said they found a stronger smell inside the Meishang premises, as well as in its garbage trucks running along Jinhai Road.
Meishang is a large company involved in urban waste classification, recycling and processing, and organic fertilizer production through biological techniques.
Officials from Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said they found the company has installed facilities, such as deodorant sprays, to control the smell.
However, current measures can't remove the smell completely.
The bureau has suggested the company step up management and conduct a technical overhaul to create completely environmentally friendly waste processing.
