Supermarket success

LOCAL supermarkets have been more successful in their attempts to ween shoppers off plastic.

Hu Minghua, a public relations official at Wal-Mart, said its four outlets in the city only use 800 to 900 plastic bags every day.

"That's one-tenth of what we were giving out before the ban," he said. "So far we have no plan to introduce any new green paper bags for customers."

Xing Yi, from Shanghai NGS Supermarket Group, said the use of plastic bags has dropped greatly in the past year. The government should continue to take the lead in efforts to promote the use of more eco-friendly shopping bags, she said.

The ban on free plastic bags inconveniences some customers, but most express their understanding and support.

An American surnamed Dewar at City Shop on Nanjing Road W. told Shanghai Daily he usually buys plastic bags if he buys snacks or small items at the supermarket on his way home.

"If I plan to buy a lot of stuff, I will bring a big bag with me instead of buying plastic bags," he said.
