Traders wilting in heat

TRADERS say their market near the City God Temple has been turned into "a sauna" in the past week, after the air-conditioning system broke down.

The air conditioning stopped working at the garment and ornament market on Fuyou Road, Huangpu District, on July 19.

And as the mercury kept rising, traders and customers alike began to wilt in the heat, affecting business.

"It's like a sauna, and customers not willing to stay here long," said a vendor, surnamed Fu. "They want to escape from here as fast as possible."

A carrier, surnamed Chen, said he was "sweating all over" after working just 20 minutes in the building.

Yesterday, buckets of ice were placed on the passage ways in an effort to cool down the market.

But it seemed to have little effect and vendors had to install small ceiling fans.

However, some traders switched on colored lanterns to attract customers, offsetting the effect of the fans.

The property manager of the building surnamed Zhou said the aging air conditioning system should be repaired with salvaged parts within a week.
