UN agency full of praise for Chongming Island

CHONGMING Island has been praised by a United Nations agency for its green economy and eco-friendly environment, a senior official said yesterday.

The United Nations Environmental Program, which coordinates the environmental activities of the global organization, conducted the assessment at the request of the Shanghai government, said Feng Zhiyong, the island’s deputy director.

The study considered all aspects of the island’s economy and environment, including its energy efficiency, agriculture and green transport, said Wang Zhijia, special adviser to the executive director of the program.

“The report is the first of its kind and we hope it will provide a reference for sustainable development,” he said.

Chongming’s development reflected many of the program’s key values, the report said, adding that the UN program will provide technical support during the next phase of the eco-island’s development.

Because of the island’s good air quality and healthy environment, local authorities are keen to promote it as a center for the elderly, Feng said.
