2 foreigners win Honorary Citizen of Shanghai awards

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong presented Honorary Citizen of Shanghai awards to two foreigners and Shanghai Magnolia Gold Awards to 10 others in recognition of their contributions to the city’s development.

The two recipients of honorary citizenship are Linda Tsao Yang, Chairwoman Emeritus of Asian Corporate Governance Association, and Wong Fatt Heng, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics (Shanghai) Ltd.

Yang, 90, who was born in Shanghai, is being honored for her role in promoting understanding, trust and cooperation between China and America.

During her tenure as the US Ambassador and Executive Director of the Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank from 1993 to 1999, she helped raise US$300 million in loans for the environment treatment program of Suzhou Creek.

The Committee of 100, which was co-founded by her, has been promoting Sino-American exchanges by organizing seminars relevant to both countries.

"I was in tears on hearing the good news that the government and people of my hometown gave me such high honor 70 years after I left for America to study," said Yang.

"It's a recognition and encouragement for me and I will continue making every possible effort for the further development of Shanghai," she added.

Wong, 60, was awarded for bringing latest technologies into China that benefited the medical community, cultivated talents in the field of bioscience and promoted the development of clinical laboratory in Shanghai and other parts of China.

He is also among the few to be awarded all three Magnolia awards which were initiated in 1989.

Wong won the Magnolia Silver Award in 2011 and Magnolia Gold Award in 2013. He got the permanent residence permit in 2014.

The 10 recipients of this year's Magnolia gold awards come from America, Sweden, France, Ireland, Ukraine, Italy, Singapore and Serbia.

They were awarded for their contribution in scientific research, education, international exchange and other areas.
