Expats apply for ID cards

ABOUT 10 expatriates living in Pudong who hold Chinese green cards for permanent foreign residents have applied for the new upgraded versions of the identity cards since June 1. There are more than 800 Chinese green card holders in Pudong, accounting for a third of Shanghai’s total.
The new cards with embedded chips are similar to Chinese citizens’ identity cards.
They will gradually enable access to finance, education, hospital, transport, telecommunications, tax, social insurance, property registration and legal services in China with no other personal documents required.
