Magnolia Award bestowed on 10 expats

Ten foreigners were presented the Magnolia Gold Award today by the Shanghai government in recognition of their contributions to the city's social and economic development. The award is the top honor for Shanghai expatriates.

The winners, from the United States, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland and Sweden, are top executives with multinational companies and scholars.

Karl-Heinz Bohning, general manager of BASF Auxiliary Chemicals Co, said on behalf of other recipients that the award was both an honor and an obligation. He thanked the municipal government's recognition of their small contributions to the big and great city.

"We ensure you that our best efforts and contributions will be sustainable," said Bohning, a German who has lived in Shanghai for eight years. He also appraised Shanghai and compared the city's list of achievements to the famous painting of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" as shown in the China Pavilion during the World Expo.

So far, 235 foreigners have won the Magnolia Gold Award presented annually since 1993.
