10 patients recover from eye infections
TEN of the 61 people suffering eye infections after receiving same treatment on their eyes at Shanghai No.1 People's Hospital were discharged from the hospital yesterday.
Other patients are still recovering in the hospital. None of them showed worsening symptoms or development of blindness.
Shanghai Health Bureau said it is still investigating the cause of the infection.
The 61 patients were among the 116 people who received an injection of Avastin, a medicine made by the global pharmaceutical giant Roche. Avastin is approved by China's State Food and Drug Administration for treating colon cancer but it is also used to treat eye diseases such as muscular degeneration. The hospital administered two injections in their eyes last Monday and Wednesday.
After the injections, the patients reported eye inflammation and poor vision and were quickly hospitalized by Shanghai No.1 People's Hospital. Seventeen patients with severe infections underwent surgeries, while the rest received injection to treat the infection.
Cao Yong, an official from Shanghai Roche Pharmaceuticals Ltd, said the company is
cooperating with the city's health authorities to investigate the case.
