12 people have donated organs under Shanghai's new program

TWELVE people in Shanghai have donated their organs since the city launched a new transplant program just over a year ago.

The program started when 17 city hospitals were authorized to carry out human organ collection and transplants following donations in December 2012.

Seven such donations were made so far this year, said officials from Shanghai Red Cross, speaking on the 12th anniversary of Shanghai Body Donation Memorial Day over the weekend.

While donations of corneas and cadavers by the public have been routine, these donations include multiple organs, officials said.

A total of 2,391 people registered to donate their corneas or their whole bodies last year, when 617 cases of successful donations of the body and 27 donations of corneas were realized, officials said.

By the end of 2013, the city had seen 36,205 such donation registrations including 5,680 registrations for corneas. A total of 7,323 of those donations including 93 corneas had been made.

Under the new organ donation program, the first donation was made last August by a 54-year-old local whose kidneys and liver benefited three patients.

The first donation from a child was in November, when the parents of a six-month-old boy, who was brain dead after suffocating, donated his liver and two kidneys to save two children.

"The parents of the boy will participate in the memorial activity tomorrow, when representatives of registered donors, families of body or organ donors and medical students will gather at Shanghai Fushouyuan Cemetery," said Lu Zongwei of Shanghai Red Cross yesterday.

Shanghai has been part of the national organ distribution and sharing network since 2010 in an effort to boost organ donation, improve organ management and crack down on the underground organ business.
