22% of pools fail
SOME 22 percent swimming pools in Shanghai have been found to contain excessive urea, a chemical found in urine, as a result of not changing the water in a timely fashion and some swimmers not taking showers, local health supervisors said yesterday. Some 20 percent of pools used excessive or insufficient levels of chlorine to disinfect the water, officials said. A total of 94 swimming pools were punished in 2012 for violations of regulations, and among them 77 were fined a total of 157,000 yuan (US$25,237).
