Abandoned child gets charity operations

A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl, abandoned by her parents, yesterday underwent heart surgery at Shanghai East Hospital, thanks to a local charity.

The child will undergo a second operation to repair a cleft lip and palate in a week's time.

Li Jiahui was adopted by a poor farmer's family in Shandong Province, after her adoptive mother, Li Fengrong, found the newborn girl in a box outside a health facility.

The child was found to be suffering from congenital heart disease. After learning that Shanghai East Hospital has a charity project to help needy children, the family came to Shanghai this month.

"We will make her a healthy and pretty girl," promised Dr Liu Zhongmin, the hospital president.

The medical cost of 150,000 yuan (US$22,523) is met by the Shandong Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.
