Abandoned heart op boy out of hospital

A BOY born with congenital heart disease who was abandoned three times was yesterday discharged from a Shanghai hospital, following surgery a fortnight ago.

A doctor, surnamed Xu, who treated 20-month-old Cui Chenxi at Shanghai Children's Medical Center, said the child was now out of the critical period and staff were satisfied with his progress.

More than 200,000 yuan (US$ 31,494) has been raised by volunteers for Chenxi's foster parents, Cui Kaichun and Qian Fenglan from eastern Shandong Province.

The couple had sold their house to pay for Chenxi's medical expenses.

Fund-raiser Zhou Shuping said expenses for Chenxi in Shanghai were, to date, 75,000 yuan.

However, as the boy will require medication afterward, total expenses will exceed 100,000 yuan.

Cui Kaichun, Chenxi's father, said he would donate the remaining cash to help other children.

Cui and Qian found Chenxi on the street in Shandong last February and were told by local doctors he had been abandoned three times because of his health problems. The family will return home in the coming days.
