Agreements signed with Africa
CHINESE medical companies signed four memorandums and agreements with African governments, research institutes and companies yesterday during the Global Conference on Health Promotion, which is being held in Shanghai.
These documents envision research and development collaboration between the partners as well as new hospital projects and staff training programs.
China’s national health authority also signed two memorandums with Chinese companies regarding the setting up of two funds supporting further cooperation of the Chinese and African health and medical industries. The signings were made during a symposium on China-Africa partnership in improving access to health and medical products.
Xu Ming, vice president of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products, said more Chinese companies were exploring the African market.
“We’re looking to bring whole industry chains to set up shop in Africa to further save the costs, increase efficiency and bring down the prices,” he said.
Catherine Sozi, country director and representative to China of UNAIDS, said the coming of Chinese investors from the pharmaceutical industry would significantly relieve the thirst for medicines in Africa.
“For Africa, it’s not sustainable to rely on importation of medicines and health commodities,” she said.
China’s food and drug watchdog also said it would take measures to ensure the quality of medicines exported from China to Africa.
