Alloy for coronary stents honored

A NEW alloy developed by local scientists can be made into degradable cardiovascular stents, allowing patients to regain blood vessel health without adverse reactions.

The stents will go into clinical trials at some point in the future, said Ding Wenjiang, a professor at the Materials Science and Engineering School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Ding and Jin Yaqiu from Fudan University won this year’s top prize at the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards yesterday.

Party Secretary Han Zheng presented prizes to 313 people, including five foreigners for their achievements in international science cooperation with Shanghai.

Ding, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, mainly focuses on research into light metal materials.

Over the past 30 years he has increased the ignition point of magnesium alloy from 500 degrees Celsius to 935 degrees, which makes it more useful for applications in the aerospace and automobile industries.

The new coronary stent is made of a magnesium alloy he developed.

Jin is a pioneer in the field of remote sensing in China. His theory has been widely used in urban planning and meteorology.

Officials from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission said the city has invested in research in fields like new materials and high-end equipment manufacturing for many years.

Other winners yesterday included a new generation of coal gasification technology developed by East China University of Science and Technology, and a secure payment platform jointly built by a team from Tongji University and Alipay.
