Authorities seize danger drug

LOCAL drug authority netted 750 packs of a traditional Chinese medicine that was pulled from the shelves after it caused a range of adverse side effects.

The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that the medicine was found at the drug's only distributor in the city and none of the problematic production batch had found its way to local hospitals or drugstores. The local FDA ordered the distributor to return all 750 packs to the manufacturer.

The Ministry of Health and the State Food and Drug Administration issued an urgent notice on Tuesday night ordering hospitals and medical institutes to stop using the Xiangdan injection produced by Zhejiang Tianrui Pharmaceutical Co.

Thirteen patients in Guangdong Province's Zhongshan City suffered symptoms such as shivering and fever after receiving the Xiangdan injection from production batch number 080524 last Thursday.

The injection, which mainly consists of the herbal extracts danshen and jiangxiang, is a prescription medicine used to treat heart disease by stimulating blood circulation and broadening the blood vessels.

Tests by the Guangdong Institute for Drug Control found the injection contained high levels of pyrogen, a bacterial contamination that can cause shivering, fever, nausea, coma and even death.

Xiangdan injections from different production batches are not currently banned but need to be closely monitored in clinical use, said the state health authorities.

The local FDA has asked people to call the hotline 962727 if they find any of the drug from the bad batch - number 080524 - or experience any adverse reactions after using injections from other batches.
