Bigger role for nurses as numbers rise
SHANGHAI has 79,400 registered nurses — a rise of 42 percent on 2010, Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said.
The city plans to have 90,000 to 95,400 nurses by 2020, or 3.6 nurses for every 1,000 people. The current rate is 3.28.
Shanghai also aims to further perfect a nurse cultivation system and plans to have all new nurses at city-level hospitals undergo training in key fields such as intensive care, and to set up a specialist nursing training and cultivation system, according to officials.
Nurses have begun to play a role in clinical practice, becoming a bridge between doctors and patients.
Nurses at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center launched the nation’s first children’s medical picture book over the weekend to tell children not to be afraid of going to hospital. All the materials were created by nurses, who want to end children’s fears of hospitals and treatment.
Nurses at Huadong Hospital, meanwhile, have invented a prize-winning nursing table that sits on a patient’s bed and allows patients to eat and wash themselves while in bed.
