Breakfast carts greet Lujiazui office workers
ON busy mornings on their way to work, white-collar employees in the Lujiazui financial zone can now get takeaway breakfast at street food carts that started operation yesterday.
Lujiazui administrators launched 12 food carts serving breakfast and snacks at Metro station entrances and near office buildings to make up for a shortage of restaurants and convenience stores in the zone.
The food and beverages provided by the carts include buns and porridge, and range between 1.5 yuan (23 US cents) and 10 yuan.
The carts provided 100 free breakfast meals to passers-by early yesterday morning, and they were snapped up by locals quickly.
The 12 carts will make two rounds of service on weekdays - from 7:30am to 9am and from 3pm to 9pm, according to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone Administration, which oversees the service.
The carts will be closed on weekends.
"The food carts will sell takeaway lunches in the future," said Guo Rong, deputy director of the administration. "But the cart locations will be different and closer to the office buildings."
The food carts are not allowed to roam, a rule meant to facilitate their oversight and help workers to find them.
The financial zone accommodates about 150,000 white-collar workers, many of whom skip breakfast in busy mornings because they have no time at home and are reluctant to walk a kilometer to reach the nearest restaurants and stores in the zone.
Wang Yixiu, an employee in Lujiazui, said she hopes the administrator will introduce more carts because it's still a little bit far for her to reach the nearest one.
Three chains, including the Chinese fast-food chain East Dawning, won the bid to operate the food carts in the area.
Guo said adjustments to the catering service provider will be made every year according to workers' response.
